Washington finished up the 2010 NHL Entry Draft with the selection of defenseman Samuel Carrier with its sixth-round (176th overall) choice. Carrier, a blueliner who plays for Lewiston of the QMJHL, was the fifth player chosen by Washington in the draft. The total of five players drafted matches the fewest in Capitals' franchise history. The Caps took five players in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft.
Having dealt choice No. 146 to Toronto, the Capitals used the fifth-round pick (No. 142 overall) obtained from Phoenix for defenseman Sami Lepisto to select center Caleb Herbert from Bloomington HS in Minnesota. Herbert is a speedy 5-foot-10, 175-pound pivot who is likely to play for U-Minn-Duluth
