Having dealt choice No. 146 to Toronto, the Capitals used the fifth-round pick (No. 142 overall) obtained from Phoenix for defenseman Sami Lepisto to select center Caleb Herbert from Bloomington HS in Minnesota. Herbert is a speedy 5-foot-10, 175-pound pivot who is likely to play for U-Minn-Duluth in 2011-12 after a season in the USHL.
Already owning three bright young goaltenders in Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby, the Capitals traded a fifth-rounder (No. 146 overall) and a fourth-rounder (116th) to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 112th pick overall. Washington used that choice to grab German goaltender
