Team USA Names Preliminary WJC RosterPosted on January 14, 2013 by Mike Vogel
A day after Hockey Canada announced its 37-man preliminary roster for the 2013 IIHF World Championship, USA Hockey followed suit. Team USA announced its 27-man preliminary roster on Tuesday morning.
One Caps draftee is on the list. Riley Barber, Washington’s sixth-round choice (167th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft. Barber, a forward from Livonia, Mich., is a freshman at Miami U (Ohio).
Barber is second on the Miami squad in scoring this season; he has six goals and a dozen assists for 18 points in 14 games. Barber also has eight penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 194-pound Barber was not one of the 45 players in attendance at the 2012 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. last August.
Along with Rocco Grimaldi of the U. of North Dakota, Barber is one of just two players on the Team USA preliminary roster who did not attend the evaluation camp in Lake Placid last summer. Four Caps draftees – defensemen Garrett Haar and Connor Carrick and forwards Travis Boyd and Thomas Di Pauli – were at the Lake Placid camp.
Barber is the son of former NHL player Don Barber.
The Team USA preliminary roster consists of three goaltenders, nine defensemen and 15 forwards. Thirteen different states are represented among the 27 players.
At the 2012 WJC Championship in Alberta, the Team USA entry placed a disappointing seventh. Three members of last year’s team are on the 2013 preliminary roster: goaltender John Gibson, defenseman Jacob Trouba and forward J.T. Miller.
Former Capitals defenseman Phil Housley is the head coach of the Team USA squad.
The players on the preliminary roster will practice at a training camp at the Madison Square Garden Training Center in Tarrytown, N.Y. Dec. 16-18. A second training camp in Helsinki, Finland takes place Dec. 19-23; the second camp includes pre-tournament games against Sweden and Finland, respectively.
USA Hockey will announce its final 23-man roster for the tournament on Dec. 23. The tournament will take place in Ufa, Russia Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013.
Team USA will compete in a group with Canada, Germany, Russia and
Slovakia at the 2013 WJC Championship. The team will play its first
tournament game against Germany on Dec. 27. All of Team USA’s games will
be televised live on NHL Network.
