Caps Issue Qualifying Offers

Posted on July 02, 2013 by Mike Vogel

The Capitals have extended qualifying offers to five players for the upcoming 2013-14 NHL season. Defensemen Karl Alzner and Tomas Kundratek and forwards Marcus Johansson, Peter Leblanc and Nicolas Deschamps all received qualifying offers from Washington for the ’13-14 campaign.

Washington did not issue qualifying offers to forwards Mattias Sjogren and Danick Paquette and defenseman Dustin Stevenson. Those three players now become unrestricted free agents.

The issuance of the qualifying offers enables the Caps to retain negotiating and offer-matching rights for those five players. The qualifying offers expire on July 20, but negotiating rights are not severed if the offer is not accepted.

Of the five players who received qualifying offers, Alzner and Leblanc are both eligible for arbitration rights, meaning they can choose to have their salary determined by a hearing before an independent arbitrator. The deadline for a player to file for arbitration is July 10, and the deadline for a club to request arbitration is July 11.

This summer’s NHL arbitration cases will be heard from July 22 through August 6.
