Caps Recall Wellman

Posted on December 17, 2013 by Mike Vogel

With rookie center Michael Latta ailing and with pivot Mikhail Grabovski still feeling the effects of the flu-like symptoms that kept him out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers at Verizon Center, the Caps have recalled forward Casey Wellman from AHL Hershey.

Washington acquired Wellman in a deal with Florida last Jan. 31, a swap that sent center Zach Hamill to the Panthers. The 26-year-old Wellman has 41 games worth of NHL experience under his belt, all of them with the Minnesota Wild spread over a span of three seasons starting in 2009-10.

The Capitals recalled Wellman once last season, putting out the call for the Brentwood, Calif. native on Feb. 26. He was with Washington for two games – including a Feb. 27 game here in Philadelphia – but was a healthy scratch in both of those contests before being returned to the Bears on Feb. 28.

Wellman last saw regular season action in the NHL with the Wild on Jan. 19, 2012 in a game against the Maple Leafs in Toronto. He did appear in two preseason games for Washington in September, scoring a goal.

With Hershey this season, Wellman has totaled seven goals and 13 points in 23 games.

Wellman will be on the ice this morning in Philly for the Caps’ morning skate prior to tonight’s 7:30 p.m game against the Flyers here.
