Caps Fall to Philly in Rookie Game, 1-0

Posted on September 09, 2013 by Mike Vogel

Philadelphia eked out a 1-0 win over Washington in the sixth annual rookie camp game between the two teams on Monday afternoon at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington.

Taylor Leier – who signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers earlier in the day – scored the lone goal of the contest at 5:37 of the second period, beating Caps goalie Brandon Anderson with a top shelf wrist shot from the right side.

Bothe teams had their share of quality scoring chances, but all four goaltenders (two on each side) played well and the penalty killers on both sides were perfect in multiple missions.

The Flyers are the first team to win on the road in the rookie game series and the first team to take consecutive contests. Philadelphia won the 2011 game in Philly, the most recent game in the series. The Flyers now hold a 4-2 advantage in the six contests.

Caps rookie right wing Tom Wilson sported the captain’s “C” on his sweater and defensemen Patrick Wey and Jaynen Rissling had the alternate captain’s “A” adorning their sweaters.

After five practices and today’s game against the Flyers, the Capitals’ 2013 rookie camp has come to a conclusion. Many of the two dozen players in attendance at camp will remain in Arlington to take part in the Caps’ 2013 training camp, which gets underway on Thursday with three different squads of players taking the ice.

One of those three squads will be Ontario-bound on Saturday morning. The Caps are slated to take on the Winnipeg Jets in the first of their eight exhibition games this fall in a neutral-site game at Belleville, Ontario. Those eight tune-up tilts will be played in a span of just 15 days as the Caps prepare for their 2013-14 season opening contest against the Blackhawks in Chicago on Oct. 1.
